OWLET MOTHS (Erebidae)


Description

The Black-banded Owlet has a wingspan of approximately .75 inch (17-24 mm).  The forewing and hindwing are dark violet-gray.  Black antemedial and postmedial lines are wavy.  The blackish median and subterminal bands are wide.  There is a fine white line on the underside of  the subterminal band.  Caterpillars are pale grayish brown with white crossbands at the segments and a dark brown dorsal line.



Occurrence

The frequency of occurrence at Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is not known.  One individual has been photographed at Camp Brewster, Fontenelle Forest in mid-August 2015.  Adults fly May through September.



Comments

The larvae feed on clover, grass and dead leaves.
