OWLET MOTH FAMILY (Noctuidae)


Description

Roland’s Sallow has a wingspan of about 1.5 inches.  It is gray to black with a conspicuous orbicular spot that is white with a gray center.  The hindwing is grayish-brown.  The caterpillar is lime green with white dots and thin white lines, some of which are made up of dashes and dots.  A white stripe on the side of the abdomen gets wider near the rear end.  It grows to 1.5 inches.



Occurrence

This moth was photographed at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center in early April 2015.  The adults are present in March and April.  The frequency of occurrence At Fontenelle Forest is not presently known, but It is considered uncommon in its range.  The caterpillars are out in early spring as they eat the tender, new foliage.




Comments

The larvae eat Oak leaves.  There is one generation with mature caterpillars in the spring.  The species overwinters in the pupal stage.
