OWLET MOTH FAMILY (Erebidae)


Description

The woody Underwing is about one inch long and has a wingspan of 1.5 to 2 inches.  The forewing is greenish-gray with chestnut brown along the inner margin.  The inner section of the PM line forms a black dash parallel to the inner margin.  The hindwing is yellow/orange with black bands.  The caterpillar has a grayish brown body with the upper side of the head orange or white. The 5th abdominal segment has a prominent horn.  The underside of the body is waxy white.



Occurrence

The frequency of occurrence of this Underwing at Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is unknown.  It has been photographed at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center in early July 2014.




Comments

The larvae eat the leaves of apple, crabapple, Hawthorn, plum and related plants.  Adults fly from June to August.
