OWLET MOTHS (Noctuidae)


Description

The Yellow Three-spot Moth has a wingspan of about 1.5 inches.  The forewing is yellow-orange with brown scalloping.  There are 3 brown or blackish spots:  above the reniform spot; the reniform spot has a black spot in the inner half;  and the  brown subapical spot near the costa.  The brown subterminal line is broken before it meets the subapical spot.  The hindwing is grayish brown with dark dots along the orange-yellow outer margin.



Occurrence

The frequency of occurrence is not known.  One individual was photographed in early September at Neale Woods coming to artificial lights.  Adults fly from July to September.



Comments

The host plants are sod grasses.  There are 64 species in the genus Apamea in North America.
