Description

The Whitney's Underwing Moth has a wingspan of 1.75 inches.  The forewing is dark brown with 2 black triangles, one over the reniform spot and the other outside of the antemedial line.  The hindwing is yellow-orange with 2 black bands.  



Occurrence

The frequency of occurrence is not known.  The individual shown here was photographed at Neale Woods on July 7, 2013 coming to artificial lights.  The adults are most common in July and August.




Comments

The hostplants are reported to be leadplant, oak and locust.  There are 110 species in the genus Catocala in North America.
