ADJUTANT WAINSCOT

Leucanis adjuta

OWLET MOTHS (Noctuidae)

Description

The Adjutant Wainscot has a wingspan of about 1.25 inches.  The forewing is strawcolored with brown lines along veins.  The pale central line extends beyond the black discal dot & is accented with a black dot at mid-point.  The thorax has speckled gray bands behind the head.  The hindwing is straw-colored with dark veins and pale fringes.  The larva is tan with brown lines and black spiracles.  It grows to 1.5 inches.  The caterpillars resemble other Leucanis caterpillars which makes identification difficult.  Identification should be based on adults.

Occurrence

The frequency of occurrence at Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is not known.  The moth shown here was photographed at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center in mid-June 2013.  Adults will come to artificial lights.

Comments

The larvae eat various grasses including orchard grass.
