ELM BORER

Superba tridentata

LONG-HORNED BEETLES (Cerambycidae)

Description
A gray and orange beetle ranging in size from 1/3 to 2/3 rds of an inch long. The elytra are covered with gray hairs. There is an orangish or reddish stripe along lateral margin and 3 bands of the same color across each elytron. There are two black spots on the side of the pronotum, and two more black spots on each elytron .

Occurrence
The elm borer is found in deciduous woods containing elms. This one was photographed at Camp Brewster in early June, 2013. We expect it to be fairly common at Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods.

Comments
The larvae feed in galleries under the bark of various species of elm. This beetle belongs to the subfamily Lamiinae or flat faced long horned beetles which are characterized by a nearly flat face.
