BIG BROWN BAT

Eptesicus fuscus

 (Vespertilionidae)

Description
This species of bat, brown and about 4-5 inches long, was identified with the help of two local experts, Russ Benedict and Jeremy White. These smaller bats are not easy to identify, but a key feature is the shape of their tragus, the elongated part inside the outer ear (B). This specimen was photographed on a Cottonwood tree on the floodplain of Fontenelle Forest in early August 2012.

Occurrence
This species of bat is assumed to be common in Fontenelle Forest, but seldom seen in daylight.
