Term Definition
peristome
In mosses, the fringe of teeth around the opening of the capsule.
petal
Individual part of the corolla; often brightly colored, may be separate or fused to form funnels or bells.
petals
plural of petal - individual parts of the corolla, often brightly colored.
petiole
In plants - a leaf stalk. In wasps - the constricted 1st. (and sometimes 2nd) segment of the abdomen.
petioles
Plural of petiole - the leaf stalk of a plant.
pinnate
When pertaining to a leaf - leaflets arranged in two rows on a stalk.
pinnately
Referring to pinnate - leaflets arranged in two rows on a stalk.
pistil
The female organ of a plant, consisting of ovary, style and stigma.
plasmodium
macroscopic form of a slime mold
plastron
The lower shell of a turtle.
posterior
Referring to the back part of an insect or the rear section of parts of the insect anatomy.
prickle
A small, pointed extension on the plant's skin.
primaries
The outermost feathers on the wing.
proboscis
An insect's long mouthpart used to reach into or pierce a food source such as a flower.
proleg
An fleshy extension of a caterpillar's body, usually in pairs, used for support.
